Meta is taking another step in the AI race by announcing the arrival of incognito chats for Meta AI on WhatsApp.
The feature, which will also roll out to the standalone Meta AI app in the coming weeks, aims to provide users with a more private environment to interact with the chatbot, especially when questions involve sensitive topics such as health, finances, or personal relationships. According to the company, conversations started in incognito mode will be processed in a secure environment and will not be visible to anyone else.
Users will be able to activate the session by tapping a new icon within one-to-one chats with Meta AI. Once the chat is closed, messages will not be saved and will disappear by default. In addition, if the user closes the app or locks their phone, the session automatically ends and Meta AI loses the context of that conversation.
A MODE DESIGNED FOR PRIVACY
The update marks an important shift in the relationship between AI and privacy. Meta explained that more and more people are using artificial intelligence for highly personal matters, ranging from financial questions to advice on how to respond to difficult messages from friends or colleagues.
For this reason, according to Alice Newton-Rex, it is essential to give users the ability to ask these questions in the most private way possible.
The launch did not come out of nowhere. For some time, Meta has been building the technical infrastructure necessary to integrate AI features without compromising WhatsApp’s end-to-end encryption.
As early as last year, the company introduced its private processing system, designed to enable AI-related processing without exposing chat contents. Since then, WhatsApp has also started rolling out tools such as AI-generated message summaries based on the same architecture.
THE ROLE OF THE NEW AI MODEL
One particularly interesting detail is that the new incognito chat does not rely on older models, but instead uses Muse Spark, Meta’s latest next-generation AI model launched last month.
This suggests that the company is leveraging its most advanced technology to support a feature considered strategic from both a technical and commercial perspective.
META’S NEXT STEPS
Meta is also reportedly working on the next evolution of this infrastructure: a feature called Side Chat, which would allow users to invoke Meta AI directly inside conversations without notifying other participants.
This would make it possible to ask questions or request clarifications privately, without having to copy chat content into a separate window. Today, in fact, users who want to ask the assistant something confidential often need to open a completely separate conversation.
THE TRUST CHALLENGE
Meta’s move comes at a time when the market is increasingly shifting toward privacy-first chatbots. Both ChatGPT and Claude already offer incognito modes, while companies such as DuckDuckGo and Proton have launched AI assistants built around data privacy.
The challenge is therefore no longer just about delivering fast and accurate answers, but about convincing users that those answers will not compromise their privacy.
There is also a legal context that makes this move even more significant. According to Reuters, last month some lawyers warned that conversations with AI chatbots could potentially be used against users in legal disputes.
In this scenario, the demand for more protected tools is no longer just about convenience, but also about the real risk of exposing sensitive information.
A NEW RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AI AND TRUST
For Meta, incognito chats represent far more than a technical update.
They are an attempt to redefine the relationship between AI and trust by offering users a system that promises privacy, control, and reduced exposure of personal data.
If the rollout delivers on its promises, WhatsApp could become one of the world’s leading testing grounds for the new era of private AI-powered conversations.
